Food & History Tour

Bencotto is one of our favorite restaurants to visit in the North End. Their food, thoughtfully constructed by head chef Fabio, is absolutely amazing every time we’ve been there. They provide their handmade specialty ravioli and brick oven pizza for our North End food and History tour.

“If we don’t got it, you don’t need it!” is the official motto of Salumeria Italiana, one of the North End’s finest import groceries. We have been fans of this grocery for years; they have such an amazing stock of goods imported from Italy that can’t be found anywhere else (except Italy, of course!), not to mention an excellent selection of olives, cheeses, oils, and vinegars. They also happen to have the best sandwiches in town, which we proudly feature on our North End food and History tour.

Our favorite nuts are Q’s nuts! This family-owned shop in the Boston Public Market consistently puts out the highest quality and tastiest nuts we’ve ever had the privilege of popping in our mouths. Their secret is that they use real ingredients! The Chocolate Raspberry is made with real chocolate and real raspberries; the Bananas Foster features real bananas, and the star of the show, the Maple Bourbon Pecan, uses, you guessed it, real bourbon! A free tasting is included on our North End Food and History Tour!

Red’s Best partners with local New England fishing communities to provide them with a means to compete with the big global fishing companies, while at the same time promoting sustainable fishing! We absolutely love their mission and their fresh-caught seafood. They supply our North End Food and History Tour with one of the best lobster rolls in New England!

If the question is, “Where should I go to get the best cannoli in Boston?” the answer is absolutely Modern Pastry. No other bakery offers a traditional cannoli that is as good, and it’s because Modern always fills every cannoli to order. Don’t be fooled into thinking that they are just a cannoli place, though; Modern has a rich assortment of traditional pastries and Italian specialties, all of which are amazing. No trip to the North End would be complete without a cannoli, and every North End Food and History Tour ends with a trip to Modern!

Dune Brothers has steadily grown into a Providence staple since its founding in 2017. With a high emphasis on chef-crafted quality & sustainable fishing practices, their ‘pier-to-plate’ approach has made them one of the most beloved and unique clamshacks in Rhode Island. While their diverse menu intentionally puts a spotlight on lesser-known local seafood species, their lobster rolls have become synonymous with some of the best in New England. It’s an absolute must-visit in Providence.

For those local to the area, Geoff’s has been a Providence institution in the College Hill/Fox Point neighborhoods since the initial sandwich shop opened over 50 years ago. Everyone knows Geoff’s. What makes this family-owned superlative sandwich shop so super is its ridiculously large menu. With over 90 different sandwiches ranging from classic to quirky, all served on a variety of locally baked breads, and their iconic house-made deli quick pickles, Geoff's has something literally everyone can enjoy.

When you search ‘Best Pizza in Providence’, you may be met with dozens of local names, each serving a dozen different regional or international styles of pizza. But on every who’s who list of pizza in Providence, you’ll see Fellini’s. This award-winning, fun-loving, locally owned pizzeria has been slinging its supersized NY-style speciality slices from its Wickenden St pizzeria for over 40 years and has the history and credentials to back its claim of ‘Best Pizza in Providence’.
-
A newer player in Providence’s historic Fox Point neighborhood, Pizza Marvin has quickly made a name for themselves for their chef-curated New Haven-style pizzas, seafood appetizers, crafty bar menu, and elite vibes. Possibly their best-kept secret, though? Their high-quality, house-made, rotating seasonal soft serve ice cream. This is not your typical vanilla and chocolate swirl; Pizza Marvin puts thought & intentionality into crafting some of the most eclectic and fresh rotating seasonal specialties that you’ve probably never even dreamt possible.

“Hi, Neighbor, Have a Gansett”. This cheery, familiar, 5-word phrase has been echoing across New England for nearly a century. Nothing reflects the history of Providence quite like the story of Narragansett Brewery. In a world where there are more craft beer options than TV channels on your legally questionable jailbroken streaming service, Gansett and its fiercely loyal RI consumer base have stood the test of time. Through Prohibition, COVID, and every twist & turn in between, Narragansett Brewery has been going strong for over 135 years. This seemingly immortal brewery is a cornerstone of Rhode Island history, and its new Fox Point brewpub location connects eager consumers to some of RI’s classic culinary creations alongside its delicious drink offerings.

Brown Bee is the passion project of Palestinian-American owner Waleed Ghazi. It is more than just a coffee shop, Brown Bee is a place where artisanal pastries meets interior design meets designer clothing meets community space. Quality and intentionality is woven throughout everything they make– from their Mediterranean inspired world-class croissants, to their simple, cut-and-sew designer fabrics.

Prominently displayed on Fox Point’s main artery of Wickenden St is a seemingly out-of-place traditional Japanese-looking facade with a red tori gate over its door as if it were plucked right out of downtown Kyoto. Make no mistake, Sakura Restaurant has been a Fox Point staple for over 30+ years. They specialize in an expansive sushi menu featuring Japanese classics and American-fusion twists, and is the ONLY Japanese restaurant in Rhode Island with a traditional Japanese dining space.

In the heart of Fox Point lies this family-owned award-winning gem where tour-goers are introduced to the little known but brilliant, spice-laden world of Uyghur cuisine, a central Asian culinary tradition deeply rooted in Silk Road history. We feature their legendary, hand-pulled Jahunger noodles, which are tossed in a vibrant, tongue-tingling chili oil and packed with a perfect chew that honors centuries of regional mastery. It’s an unforgettable explosion of smoky, spicy flavor that perfectly highlights the international soul of Wickenden Street. I hope you’re Jahungry!

Aleppo Sweets is the story of a lifelong labor of love, dedication, and compassion. Owner Youssef started making baklava when he was 16 in one of Syria’s most well-known ‘sweet shops’. After years of turmoil that saw his family flee Syria, settle in Turkey, and ultimately relocate to Providence as refugees, he never lost touch with his craft. Now Aleppo is a beacon of hope & community; still family-owned, employing other local Fox Point refugees, actively contributing to the organizations that aided his family along their way, and oh by the way, serving the best dang baklava you’ve ever had in your life.

Named after the international spirit that literally translates to “burning water,” this Fox Point gem serves up a soulful, chef-inspired menu of authentic dishes and meticulously sourced spirits. It is a deeply moving, beautifully artistic space where international flavors take center stage—proving that you don't need a passport to experience some of the most spectacular international fusion in Providence.
